If we equipped a group of child artists with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure their digital wellbeing and then asked them to communicate it to their own generation – what would that look like? This was the question we sought to answer through #ReconnectUs. Digital technology has revolutionized modern society, and with the pandemic, our reliance on it has only increased. In this context, we need to ensure that we keep the conversation of digital wellbeing alive and especially engage the next generation. #ReconnectUs is a first step in starting this conversation through a series of public service announcement (PSA) videos on digital addiction, privacy, cyberbullying and misinformation created by kids for kids.
All videos were scripted, translated, acted and produced by 20 extremely talented young artists ages 13 to 19, during the pandemic entirely remotely. The artists were chosen through a formal selection process from a pool of artists who applied from across Sri Lanka. The DWI team facilitated and supported the process through workshops and production support.
#ReconnectUs was our maiden project and was generously sponsored and supported by Kindernothilfe and Stages Theatre Group. The produced PSA videos were screened at the Children in Lockdown Arts Festival held in November 2021. Translating the PSA videos into Sinhala and Tamil was supported by the National Languages Equality Advancement Project (NLEAP) Sri Lanka. We thank all those who supported us in various means during this process.
